Roller Coaster Yard Sale
Stacey and Linda returned from their trip to Pauline and Brent's house
late Thursday evening. They told me that the discrimination trial was
over and Pauline and WKU had been vindicated. The jury had returned a 9
to 3 verdict in favor of WKU.
After eating a light breakfast and a
few cups of coffee, Stacey, Linda and I took the pickup truck and headed
through town and towards Albany. We were going to trace the path of the
Roller Coaster Yard Sale through KY and TN.
We
ate lunch and then stopped at a few more places as we traveled through
TN to Byrdstown, Livingston, and then Celina.
After
looking through the large group of yard sale setups on a baseball
diamond near Celina, we took the road back to Burkesville and then drove
home. I noticed that our neighbor's new house was just about under roof.
He
has hired a three man crew and they built most of the framing, now he
has hired a roofing crew to put on the roll roofing and then the
shingles.

Cruisin' In The 65 Mustang
We made the short trip through Burkesville and stopped at Alex
Montgomery Chevrolet-GMC for their 5th Annual Cumberland River
Cruise-In. The cruise-in began at 9:30 and we arrived shortly after it
started. There were already quite a few vehicles lined up around the
parking lot. The employees were fixing food and there were coolers with
drinks for the people that attended. A band played music during the
cruise-in and also announced the winning numbers for the door prizes
that were given away. The weather couldn't have been better, it was
really nice with hardly a breeze blowing. Plenty of people from in and
out of town cruised in and enjoyed the music, food and friendship.
We
went home around 2:30 PM, put our club items away, ate a sandwich and
headed back to town. I stopped and filled the gas tank, then drove out
to the Chevy dealership and met the other club members that were going
to the Byrdstown Cruise-In. We formed a line and followed each other
through Albany, across the TN-KY state line and then on to Byrdstown.
There were plenty of vehicles already parked at the Shell station and
the band was warming up when we parked. I called our group together and
took a picture of the members that went, then I began taking pictures of
some of the vehicles that had cruised in.
One
of the sharpest cars at the cruise-in was a VW with a Chevy engine,
extremely wide tires in a tubbed rear wheel area and a beautiful
interior.
The
band began playing and sounded pretty good. We even asked about their
rates for them playing one of our cruise-ins. After the sun went down,
the weather changed and the wind began blowing cold air. We raised the
top on the Mustang, put our chairs in the trunk and headed back to the
farm.

56 Chevy Returns
A little over a year ago, Brent came with his neighbor, Wayne, and picked
up the 56 Chevy. They messed with it for a year, had it running a
few times, but like me, reached the limit of their expertise and gave
up. Stacey, Linda and I borrowed a trailer from Dave Neff of DC Auto
Service and drove to Smith's Grove. Brent had left work to help us load
the Chevy on the trailer since it wouldn't run. We pushed it out of the
garage and I realized we weren't going to be able to push the car up the
ramps and on the trailer. The street went downhill in front of Brent's
house, so I pulled the pickup and trailer into the road and down the
street. We lined up the ramps, then pushed the car into the street. I
then let the car coast down the hill and most of the way up the trailer
ramps. I put the car in gear and backed the truck and trailer up so that
the car's wheels were on the ramp. With the heaviest part of the car
already on the trailer, we then were able to push the rear end up the
ramps and position the car on the trailer using the downhill grade of
the street to roll it forward. Brent and I chained the car to the
trailer, then turned the truck and trailer around and parked it in their
driveway.
Linda
wanted to go to Sam's Club, so Brent drove the Traverse over to their
baby sitter's house and we picked up Julie and Kyle to go with us. Brent
called Pauline and told her we were with him and that he had picked up
their kids. She said she would see us when she came home from work. We
shopped at Sam's Club, loaded our groceries and supplies into the
Traverse and returned to Pauline and Brent's house. We transferred our
items to the pickup truck, then went inside. A few minutes later,
Pauline arrived. Julie and Kyle were both sleeping while we talked about
the trial Pauline had been involved in with WKU and an employee that had
been fired. I wasn't too sure about the lights on the trailer we had
borrowed, so we left about 5:15 PM and made it home just a little before
dark.

Family Visits
Friday morning, Brent had let us know that they were not going to work
and were coming to the farm early. They arrived around 9 AM with Julie,
Kyle and their dogs. Brent and I went to the pole barn and began airing
up the tires on the four wheelers. One of the tires had a split in it,
so we decided to go to Columbia and try to buy a replacement tire. We
stopped at the Kawasaki dealership and they didn't have one in stock. We
then checked at Tractor Supply and there weren't any there. We returned
to the farm to find that Linda K and Imon had arrived with his grandson,
Trevon. After saying hello and talking for a while, we went to the pole
barn and Imon plugged the split tire. It held air the rest of the
weekend. About an hour later, around 2 PM, Shelly and Jeff pulled in
with their camper. Their dog, Winston was with them too. Jeff turned the
camper around and backed it to a spot near the sidewalk going to the
back porch. A few minutes later, they had setup camp and were ready to
begin enjoying the weekend. Linda K and Imon had brought partially
frozen pizzas from Pizza King with them and Linda N finished cooking
them in our oven. Those pizzas are something our family really misses,
so it was nice that they brought those for supper the first night.
Saturday
morning, Kyle began the day earlier than the other people in the house.
Pauline brought him to the master bedroom to let everyone else continue
to sleep. Pretty soon, Brent joined us and they gave Julie and Kyle
baths in the master bathroom. Shelly, Jeff and Winston came inside a
little bit later.
The
weather couldn't have been any better, in the mid 80s during the day,
not a cloud in the sky and cool at night. It was warm enough that
Trevon, Shelly, Jeff and Winston were walking in the creek water.
We
rode the ATVs and drove the Mule, let Winston and Daisy run with us
around the hay fields, set under the shade trees and just had fun most
of the day. There had been a mix up on what weekend they were coming and
Linda and I had ordered concert tickets, so we had to get ready to drive
to Glasgow for the Mary Chapin Carter concert at the Plaza Theatre.
Jason was going with us, so we picked him up at 4 PM on the way, then
stopped at Mancino's in Glasgo and ate a pepperoni pizza. We drove to
the Courthouse Square and parked near the Plaza Theatre. I noticed there
was a wedding happening in the gazebo, so I walked up and took a picture
of the groom as he was kissing the bride. We then went inside the Plaza
and were escorted to our seats.
I
took a picture of Stacey and Jason setting next to each other, then the
concert started. Mary Chapin Carter played a slow song as one by one,
each of her band members joined her on stage, then began to play. She
played several of her newest songs, then began playing her more populars
songs until they said good night and walked off the stage to a standing
ovation. They came back and played three more of her best songs and were
done. They had played an hour and forty minutes. The concert was pretty
good, a little slow at first, but built momentum until the encore was
over.
We
left the Plaza Theatre and stopped for drinks at a filling station on
the way back to Burkesville. Stacey and Jason talked about the concert
as they drank their cold drinks until we dropped Jason off at his house
around 9:30 PM. We returned to the farm and found a few people still
sitting outside at Shelly and Jeff's camper. We drank some of the
champagne that the lawyer had presented to Pauline for her participation
in the WKU trial. I guess we don't have expensive tastes. None of us
liked the taste of the Dom Perignon Champagne. Oh well.
Sunday
morning, Pauline was playing with the kids while Shelly and Linda N
fixed breakfast. Linda made a breakfast strudel for a sweet treat after
we ate Shelly's hot peppers with eggs scramble.
Around
1 PM, Linda K and Imon loaded their stuff, then I used the tractor and
sat a couple big rocks into the back of Imon's pickup. Shelly and Jeff
were packing their camping stuff away too. I asked all of them to step
to the back side walk and I took pictures before they left.
We
had a great time with everyone that came down and a little before 7 PM,
Linda received a phone call from Imon and he said they had made it home
and had a good time too.

Color Everywhere
This morning, Stacey and I took the Mule and let Daisy run around while
I took pictures. The leaves on the trees have really started changing
colors and are getting close to their peak.
Later
in the day, we received about a half inch of rain. It was enough to make
the water in the creek begin to flow again. We are still under a fire
warning and there are restrictions on open burning in effect.

Foothills Festival
Linda went to work early at the day care because it is Fall Break and
the kids are out of school. Stacey and I went to town and met Jason for
breakfast before he went to work. After eating, we stopped at the bank
and post office, then returned to the farm. We went for a Mule ride with
Daisy running along and did a few odd jobs. Linda returned from work
around 2 PM and washed her Mustang. Then we all went to Albany to the
Foothills Festival.
There
were lots of booths spread around the town streets and quite a few food
vendors. I made a bad choice , I ordered one sandwich for me of roast
beef and one for Linda of smoked sausage with onions and green peppers,
total price $16. I asked twice, "how much?" Yep, $16. Wow!. We moved on
down the line and Stacey ordered nachos at a different place and three
drinks. That price was a lot better, only $5 for it all. The lady
couldn't get the cheese to stop running out and she filled Stacey's
nachos with way too much cheese. It was funny.
After
walking around the rest of the streets and checking out all the booths,
we went back to the car and headed home. Traffic was backed up coming
into town. I think we had been there and left before most people had a
chance to get off work and arrive. It worked out real well for us.

Hauling Firewood
While we were at the Foothills Festival Friday, we saw a wood burning
stove displayed for sale, it was from a shop in Albany. They had a fire
burning in the stoves, they sell gas fired, wood pellet and wood stoves.
It made us think about ours. When we returned to the farm, Stacey and I
hauled the wood racks to the back porch and sat them off the trailer.
Linda then made a spot for the racks to set on the back porch.
Saturday,
I hooked up the black trailer to the Mule and Stacey, Linda and I went
to the wood shed and loaded the trailer and the bed of the Mule full of
firewood. We put the starter wood in the Mule and the longer burning
wood on the trailer. I drove the Mule with the trailer to the back of
the house and we stacked the starter wood in the round wood rack, then
stacked the other wood on the porch floor between the wood racks I had
made a few years ago.
We
made three trips and the area between the racks was full. Linda and I
then went to the barn and chopped up some of the wood scraps left over
from the construction of our house. The pine 2 by 4s make great kindling
once they're chopped into smaller pieces. We filled the wooden box and
then set it on the back porch near the door where it will stay dry. The
weather is still above 70 degrees during the day, heck we were wearing
shorts and t-shirts while we moved the wood, but we really enjoy a wood
fire in the stove. Once the sun went down, I noticed the house was
cooling off, so I lit a small fire to take the chill off.
As a side
note, there was a forest fire about 5 miles from the farm. It burnt
Friday and was still burning Saturday evening. They have used bulldozers
to make a fire break around it and are hoping it will burn itself out.
There are 38 counties in KY with burn bans of some sort, even though we
had a half inch of rain during the week.

Home Makers' Bicentennial Cake
Linda baked two cakes and then joined them with other cakes at the
Senior Citizen's and Veteran's Building. The Home Maker Clubs of
Cumberland County were assembling the Birthday Cake for the Burkesville
Bicentennial Celebration. There were over 20 cakes joined together and
then covered with icing and decorated.
The
Birthday Cake will be cut and served after the opening ceremony at 5 PM
on Thursday evening.

Burkesville Bicentennial Celebration Begins
We headed into town a little after 4 PM to attend the opening ceremonies
for the Burkesville Bicentennial Celebration. We went into the Senior
Citizen's and Veteran's Building and took pictures of the cake first,
then went over to the stage in the park for the celebration. A good size
crowd had gathered and Mayor Keith Riddle began the ceremonies by
introducing the people on the stage.
The
Mayor asked everyone to stand and the Color Guard Presented the Colors
and the Cumberland County High School Band played the National Anthem.
Then the Mayor introduced the President of the State Senate.
KY
Senator David Williams spoke for a few minutes about the history of
Burkesville and his hopes for it's future. Mary Owens sang "My Old
Kentucky Home" as the crowd stood. Doug Butler then told some tall tales
of yesteryear in Cumberland County.
Linda
Brown talked about the winner of the poster competition and introduced
the essay winner and he read his essay to the crowd. Two high school
boys presented the Time Capsule that will be buried for 50 years and
will be opened in 2060 at the next celebration.
Mayor
Riddle and Charlotte Cash, the artist that had drawn the graphic,
presented the new official City of Burkesville Flag to the audience.
Then Jo Murley, accompanied by Libby Mullinix, sang Cumberland, My
Cumberland.
Reverend
Hosea Anders delivered an inspirational prayer for all in attendance,
then the audience was asked to move to the Senior Citizen's and
Veteran's Building for the cutting of the cake. Mayor Riddle cut the
cake as the Home Makers watched, then began serving the cake and punch.
There
was a long line of people that waited to enjoy a piece of the
Burkesville Bicentennial Birthday Cake after which they mingled and
talked until Jo Murley and Libby Mullinix came in and the entire crowd
sang "Happy Birthday" to Burkesville.

Veterans' Breakfast
This morning, I took the muffins that Linda had made to the Senior
Citizens' & Veterans' Building. The Burkesville Bicentennial Celebration
Committee was providing a free breakfast for all veterans. The ladies
were ready at 7 AM and the tables were full of food. Several early
arrivers stood together and I took their pictures.
Millard
Willis gave a short prayer before the veterans began forming a line to
fill their plates.
In
a short amount of time, the room began filling up and the veterans were
talking about some of their experiences while they were being served
refills on coffee by the ladies.
As
I walked among the veterans, I could hear some talking about their tours
of duty and some of the things they had been through. It seemed like a
family reunion at times.

Grand Kids Stay Over
After a busy weekend with the Burkesville Bicentennial Celebration,
Pauline and Brent went home and Julie and Kyle stayed with us. P&B had
something planned on Monday evening and it was easier for their kids to
stay at our house than to make other arrangements. Julie and Kyle have
stayed before and they do great. Julie, Kyle and I watched "Super Why"
in the mornings while Linda was fixing breakfast. Linda likes to fix
breakfast when Julie is here so that she will eat a bunch. Linda fixed
'sticky buns' (cinnamon rolls) for Julie Monday morning and pan cakes
Tuesday morning.
We
went to Taco Bell for lunch one day and that was a little out of Julie's
comfort zone, but she ate enough to not be hungry. It seems like Kyle
will eat nearly anything and all the time. After having a bath in the
evening, Kyle was enjoying only being partially dressed. He could crawl
on the floor and climb up on the furniture easier without pants, he was
highly mobile in nothing but a diaper. We moved the rug out of the
living room and that let him move easily through the kitchen, dinning
room and living room in the walker. Kyle would crawl behind the walker
for a while, then venture up to walking behind it a little. He is still
dropping down to crawl most of the time.

Frosty
There was a hard frost last night. Really the first one that should kill
most of the weeds around the fields. It will be much easier to trim
around the hay fields now that the leaves will be gone on all the stuff
that had grown up.
We
watched some of Jon Stewart's "Restore Sanity and/or Fear" special on
Comedy Central, then decided to go to Russell Springs to see what was
happening at their festival.
Stacey
notice a car painted like the "General Lee" that was featured on the
"Dukes Of Hazzard" television show, so she wanted her picture made
standing beside it. It was part of the car show they were having, later,
they had the police car following the "General Lee" through town with
the siren blarring.
